Jill Scott was born on April 4 1972 at Philadelphia Pennsylvania to her mother Joyce Scott. As an only girl She was also raised by her maternal grandmother. Scott was a student at the Philadelphia High School for Girls After graduating, she entered Temple University. While working two jobs part-time, she took classes in secondary teaching at Temple University. Her goal was to be an instructor of English in a secondary school. It was impossible to realize her dream, however, when after studying for three years while working as a teacher assistant in college, she decided to leave. A poet by trade, she began performing at live poetry recitals. Then she joined with Amir Quest Thompson (of The Roots) to create an ensemble. You Got Me, their collaboration song, was composed by the duo. In the Roots performance, she declared her artist status. Afterward she secured collaborations with artists like Eric Benet Will Smith and Common. She also gained experience in performing through the Canada production of Broadway's show Rent. The label signed her as its first artist.
